As a Supervisory Hydrologist within the Texas-Oklahoma Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:   This position serves as the Branch Chief of the Gulf Coast Branch of the Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center. You will provide leadership and program direction for over 25 employees in two Sections that are actively working on surface-water, water quality and groundwater issues in the Gulf Coast area of Texas. 

  • Plan and develop cooperative hydrologic studies programs with State and local governments and agencies, other Federal agencies, headquarters mission areas, and other water resources agencies.
  • Works in coordination with Centers' Discipline Specialists, Science Chiefs, and Field Office Chiefs to make project assignments, assure projects are adequately staffed and have enough resources, and oversee projects to ensure that project objectives, timelines, and financial constraints are met.
  • Oversee the use and coordination of human and financial resources among various units of the Centers, assists in balancing the Centers budgets, and in developing formal and informal measures to ensure timely and within budget completion of program commitments.
  • Operate a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands

Work is primarily sedentary with occasional physical activity including walking, climbing, and bending as required during field reconnaissance of an area or site. All duties must be performed consistent with USGS and other, government safety policies and practices.

Work Environment

Most work is performed in an office setting, although there is occasional field work, which involves a low degree of risk when conducting on-the-ground assessment of operations as well as exposure to moderate discomfort from such extremes as heat, cold, and inclement weather.

  • In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in hydrologic work for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert in hydrology. At this level, Hydrologists typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect hydrologic programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high level forums.
