About the Position:
This is a full-time civilian faculty position at the USAWC as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment may be up to three years, with the first year probationary. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments; however, the focus and salary is at the Assistant/Associate Professor level.

Duties

Help
  • Supervising the development of the defense-management curriculum, ensuring it accurately reflects current Army and Department of Defense policies and procedures
  • Developing and teaching courses related to strategic leadership and defense management responsibilities of senior leaders
  • Reviewing and editing chapters of How the Army Runs (HTAR)
  • Remaining a master of emerging defense management concepts as they apply to joint and service planning systems
  • Designing and supervising research projects for students and faculty in the area of defense management
  • Providing counsel to faculty and students on subjects related to defense-management systems and processes
  • Designing and teaching elective courses and directed readings for selected students
  • Coordinating with external agencies on behalf of USAWC
  • Engaging in scholarship that advances knowledge in the field of defense management
  • Engaging in service (internal and external) in support of USAWC missions
  • Serving annually as a faculty instructor for one seminar, faculty advisor providing counsel for up to six, mid- career professionals, and project advisor for student research projects
  • Contributing to the Army War College mission by fulfilling faculty duties as required

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be rated based on the criteria listed below by a panel of subject matter experts appointed with the purpose of identifying the best-qualified candidates.
  1. Ability for superlative teaching at the graduate or Senior Service College level.
  2. Mastery of defense management programs, policies, and procedures across the Department of Defense.
  3. Refined oral and written communication skills, including the ability to design and supervise graduate-level courses, direct and assess student research projects, and conduct associated educational programs.
  4. Ability to advance knowledge in the field of defense resource management through research, presentation, and publication.
  5. The ability to conceptualize, design, and write lesson plans that support the Resident Education Program (REP) at the U.S. Army War College.
  6. Ability to prepare, teach, and lecture on subjects related to strategic leadership and defense management.
  7. A graduate degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field is required; a terminal degree is desirable, but not required.
  8. Experience and high levels of performance in defense management staff and executive positions at the strategic level are highly desirable. Examples of this experience include, but are not limited to the following: Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Joint, Service Staff, or TRADOC experience with Force Management, the Planning, Programming, Budget, Execution (PPBE) System, the Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (JCIDS), or the Defense Acquisition System (DAS).
