The position serves as an Innovation Specialist in the Digital Innovation Lab (also known as LC Labs, more at labs.loc.gov) in the Digital Strategy Directorate (www.loc.gov/digital-strategy) of the Office of the Chief Information Officer of the Library of Congress. The position reports directly to the LC Labs Chief who provides administrative and policy direction concerning overall project priorities and objectives. This position is a grant-funded, 3-year digital scholarship support position for the Library’s “Computing Cultural Heritage in the Cloud” project (https://labs.loc.gov/experiments/cchc/) .

This role is one of two that will provide support digital scholarship support to researchers performing computational analysis on digital Library collections as part of a grant funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation entitled “Computing Cultural Heritage in the Cloud” (CCHC). This effort will help produce models for supporting cloud-based research computing, and will make the costs and possibilities of this work more transparent to the broader cultural heritage community.

The two digital scholarship experts will work together and with other Library staff to support four researchers in sub-setting, transformation, analysis and documentation of Library collections for use in computational research. They will liaise with Library of Congress curators and reference librarians to develop workflows and services to support content related reference questions that require data transformations or computational approaches. As part of this work, they will coordinate Library efforts to establish legal and policy frameworks for cloud based computational research. They will also engage in internal and external outreach about the CCHC project and its outcome, and work with colleagues to advance support for digital scholarship within the Library.

These positions have some features in common with positions sometimes described as "“research software engineer” or “data scientist” positions, but requiring also aspects of research librarian work in service development for cloud-based research support.

For the duration of the project, the Innovation Specialist will:

•translate research consultations into user requirements and provide technical support to four research experts whose projects require computational access to Library collections
•build and document research data sets based on the needs identified by the research experts
•provide leadership and expertise around data visualization, text, sound, or video analysis, network analysis or another computational method within the Library
•work with others throughout the library to create a collection readiness workflows that takes into account the metadata, rights, policies and constraints of collections
•document the pilot’s technical workflows
•share grant progress through regular meetings, reports, and updates to PIs and assist with grant reporting
•help the PI and Co-PI refine the project transition plan and establish conditions for its implementation
•present project updates to organizational leadership
•coordinate with other relevant units within the Library to grow digital scholarship capacity and expertise across the organization

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge of data science and complex analysis.**

Knowledge of libraries and digital scholarship.**

Ability to problem solve complex systems.

Ability to document and present information.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid the minimum step of the grade.
