Duties

Help

The GAO is seeking experienced professionals to serve as a Sr. Biological Scientist performing the following:

  • Supports or leads the execution of engagements that are particularly technical in their issues and/or content, including technology assessments, technical performance audits or audits with biological science-related components, and Comptroller General Forums and Roundtables.
  • Plans, manages, and executes technology assessments and technical performance audits, including holding primary responsibility for designing and scoping the engagement, identifying and contacting information sources to obtain needed data, analyzing the data to develop key findings, and preparing a report to relay the results of our work to the Congress.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data to determine relevance and reliability. Provide full support for written products.
  • Develops findings, recommendations, and/or policy implications and options and drafts reports that provide factual and analytical information in a clear, balanced manner that meets the needs of congressional clients.
  • Participates in the planning, preparation, development, drafting, and review of technical sections of engagement products and supporting engagement documentation.

Qualifications

In addition to the education requirement, applicants must have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower band or level equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal Service, or comparable private/public sector experience which has equipped the applicant with the skills and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of the position.  Specialized experience for this position is defined as practical experience in executing, evaluating, assessing, or auditing government, private sector, or non-profit biological/life science, epidemiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or biomedical engineering programs.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement. Documentation to verify your education MUST be submitted with your application in order to be considered.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

3. Skill in selecting, organizing, and presenting appropriate information in a concise and balanced manner and to communicate such information to target audiences.

4. Ability to conduct research and develop reliable evidence to support report findings and recommendations.

5. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to prepare reports, participate in interviews and meetings, and to make presentations.
