Summary

Work is to assign specified codes to different medical procedures in order to keep effective medical records and ensure that bills and payments are accurate for an ambulatory care health care facility. Coding Certification is required.

The first cut-off date for applications will be January 17, 2020 with subsequent cut-off dates every 10 calendar days thereafter until position is filled.

Duties

Help

  • *Abstracts medical information from Electronic Health Records (EHR) to assign and sequence ICD-10-CM/PCS including CPT and HCPCS codes for patient diagnoses and procedures on outpatient visits.
  • *Monitors incomplete patient visits by running reports for inconsistencies or discrepancies in the medical record.
  • *Provides technical assistance in processing and maintaining CPT codes and ICD-10 codes in Electronic Health Records (EHR) as codes are manually updated in the pick list.
  • *Assists with coding audits in compliance with facility and performance improvement plans.
  • *Provides ongoing education and updates to physicians, nursing staff, and other health care personnel in the organization or work unit on coding updates, rules, regulations, and guidelines.

Security Clearance: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

For the GS-07 grade:
One year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level that equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples include: Use of a thorough knowledge of one or more of the common code sets that are currently in use (for example, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), ICD-10-CM, or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Level II ) to assign specified codes to different medical procedures for organizations such as private practice, hospital, and clinic environment.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (Grade GS-07):
In addition to the minimum qualification requirements, the following certification is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Applicants must possess and provide proof of certification as one of the following types of coding certification: (Only candidates that possess certification as Specialist meet the Selective Factor.)

    • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Additional selection(s) of candidates may be possible within 90 days from the date the certificate of eligibles was issued for this announcement.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
