Duties

The Staff Associate in the Office of the Assistant Director (OAD), ENG will demonstrate leadership in the following responsibilities and duties:

  • Works with Deputy Assistant Director and Assistant Director in the development of science policy initiatives.
  • Provides advice and assistance in the formulation of new policies, plans, and procedures relating to program planning, budget formulation, program execution, and program evaluation across the organization.
  • Develops and fosters effective liaison between ENG/OAD and the five ENG Divisions.
  • Analyzes and coordinates international, industrial, and interagency partnerships across the divisions.
  • Facilitates new partnerships, linking ENG with other NSF directorates and offices, with other agencies, with industries, with nonprofits, and with entities within other countries to inform ENG outreach strategy and to grow audiences and build support.
  • Serves as the directorate expert on establishing and maintaining partnerships, providing advice on best practices and guidance on NSF formal agreement clearance procedures.
  • Represents OAD and NSF, as appropriate, on internal committees, interagency committees, at meetings of the Federal agencies, professional organizations, or universities on behalf of the Deputy Assistant Director (DAD); participate, provide advice, and draft recommendations and reports representing outcomes of such meetings.
  • Coordinates ENG involvement in National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) interagency groups and subgroups. Recommends common policies and practices to enhance communication throughout the directorate and NSF about ongoing NSTC policy discussions and products.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematics or Social Science plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position; OR a Master's Degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematics or Social Science plus after award of the degree, eight or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

This position is outside the competitive civil service.

Education

Education may enhance skills required for this position; however, no substitution of education for specialized experience may be made at this level.
