  • Manage staff, fiscal, and physical resources of an applied, land-management focused, scientific research program or extension organization to ensure progress towards long-term goals.
  • Provide written accomplishment and progress updates regarding science-based information.
  • Assess social, economic, and political trends to inform a land-management focused scientific research program that addresses emerging climate change or threat-related information needs of multiple stakeholders.
  • Assess the impact of social, economic, and political trends on a land-management focused scientific research program.
  • Serve in a leadership capacity as a technical expert on climate change or other environmental threats (e.g., fire, invasives, pests, pathogens) to forest, range and/or agricultural land managers.
  • Plan and supervise the execution of multidisciplinary research, synthesis, tools and application related to climate or other threats (e.g., fire, invasives, pests, pathogens) for a land management focused scientific research program/ organization.
  • Develop programs of emerging science on complex and challenging issues, where the application of resulting scientific findings is critical.
  • Develop relationships to assist in defining the stakeholder-driven research objectives of a science-based organization.
  • Utilize analytical techniques to conduct studies, evaluate results, and provide impact analyses of available strategies related to scientific research.
  • Analyze and implement new methods or techniques to solve exceptionally complex management and organizational problems with unprecedented or novel aspects related to natural resources management and science delivery.

Basic Requirement for Social Science Series (0101):
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
OR
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

Basic Requirement for Biological Science Series (0401):
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirement for the Physical Science Series (1301):
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic education qualifications for at least one of the series above, you must possess the following specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. You must provide your transcripts for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the specialized experience requirements.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
For the GS-14 level: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

Specialized experience is defined as all of the following: Coordinating and delivering a program of scientific research, tool development, and science delivery that addresses climate change and/or environmental threats related information needs of multiple stakeholders across large spatial scales.

For the GS-15 level: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

Specialized experience is defined as all of the following: Leading and delivering a multidisciplinary, multifaceted program of scientific research, tool development, and science delivery that addresses climate change and/or environmental threats related information needs of multiple stakeholders across large spatial scales.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

WWETAC was chartered to address urgent environmental threats across western landscapes. Since its creation, WWETAC has examined interactions among these threats at a landscape scale. Internationally recognized as a trusted consultant, WWETAC offers unique expertise in interdisciplinary work that addresses challenges such as wildfire, insect outbreaks, and pathogens, which threaten every corner of forests and rangelands. Widely-adopted tools and modeling systems, such as ArcFuels, Landscape Treatment Designer, ForWarn, and MC2, were developed at WWETAC.

The NWCH serves Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington by delivering science-based, region-specific technologies and practical information for climate-informed decision making. Engaging with partners is a key part of the Hub's mission to create actionable science and community-focused solutions.

In leading both of these centers, each of which operates at the critical interface between science and management, the incumbent will have an unusually broad range of responsibilities. These include providing science leadership in directing a multidisciplinary research agenda, coordinating with other research programs as well as a wide range of partner groups and organizations, and leading science delivery efforts that ensure the research and tools reach the practitioners who need it. Few positions promise this much opportunity to make a tangible difference in responding to climate change and other complex management issues in the western U.S.
