Help

You will serve as the Sailing Coach for the Varsity Sailing Team, and Sail Training Instructor for cadet training programs

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.  Typical work assignments include:

  • Coaching and instructing cadets and other students and recruits in all aspects of sailing and sailboat racing.
  • Developing practice schedules and plans to prepare cadets for competition.
  • Coordinating competitive opportunities for cadet teams in Inter-collegiate and open competition.
  • Recruiting athlete sailors by actively coaching, racing and participating in the sport in a manner and style that attracts candidates to seek admission.
  • Providing technical expertise ensuring that maintenance, repairs and modifications are conducted safely and that the integrity and seaworthiness of vessels is not compromised.
  • Providing instruction of the highest level in college dinghies, small keelboats and team-racing.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that demonstrated a practical knowledge of the subject area of the position and of the methods and techniques of instruction. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  • Teaching or instructing in an adult education program, secondary school, college, military installation, or industrial establishment in the appropriate field(s).
  • Supervising or administering a training program.
  • Development or review of training/course materials, aids, devices, etc., and evaluation of training results.
  • Work in the occupation or subject-matter field of the position to be filled that required training or instructing others on a regular basis.

GS-11:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service that demonstrates a practical knowledge of the subject area of the position and of the methods and techniques of training instruction;  Examples of specialized experience include: Coaching students in a sailing program; providing instruction to other instructors and students in all forms and levels of sailing from recreational to high-level competition; developing contacts and building relationships with sailing organizations, academies, institutions and schools; ensuring that maintenance, repairs and modifications are conducted safely; ensuring vessels are seaworthy; and recruiting athlete sailors.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

OR

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related

OR

Possess a combination of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in or related to the work of this position AND graduate level education that provided the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position and experience. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at that grade level.


National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to perform this job are:

  • Knowledge of sailboat racing rules, sailboat and sail handling techniques applicable to racing, and sailboat racing tactics and strategies.
  • Ability to coach sailors in inter-collegiate competition sailboat racing.
  • Ability to communicate orally.
