Summary

This a permanent, seasonal position with 18 pay periods of guaranteed full-time work and 8 pay periods in non-pay status.

This position is located on the Tongass National Forest in Juneau, Alaska at the Admiralty Island National Monument. The Forestry Technician performs a variety of work in support of the unit wilderness/recreation program.

Duties

Help
  • Develop and monitor logistics needed to complete wilderness and trail rehabilitation, reconstruction and construction projects.
  • Review trail and wilderness area construction standards, level of maintenance, priority of work, and methods of accomplishment needed to accomplish resource management priorities.
  • Train crews in wilderness, trails construction and revegetation techniques to maintain natural resources.
  • Estimate materials, supplies and personnel needed to complete trail and wilderness projects.
  • Requisition, receive, mark and store supplies and equipment used by crews to complete trail and wilderness projects.
  • Maintain and operate power boats, vehicles, power and hand tools and shop equipment to satisfy safety standards.
  • Monitor and inspect contracted work to ensure it meets the provisions of the contract.
  • Provide public information and interpretive services.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-6: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting staff in planning and implementing the logistics required for completion of wilderness projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, facilities maintenance, habitat restoration projects and/or wilderness management projects (e.g. recreation site inventories; solitude monitoring; invasive weed surveying/treatment); patrolling recreation/wilderness areas and reporting on use, impacts and/or management concerns; serving on a crew responsible for trail maintenance surveys; following trail maintenance schedules for wilderness/recreation sites; communicating wilderness/recreation information to crew members regarding protocols, goals or safety issues.

For the GS-7: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: Planning and implementing the logistics required for completion of wilderness projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, facilities maintenance, habitat restoration projects and/or wilderness management projects (recreation site inventories; solitude monitoring; invasive weed surveying/treatment); ensuring areas were used and administered in accordance with trail/recreation/wilderness management plans; conducting trail maintenance surveys and documenting trail work needs in data management systems and/or recording and entering wilderness management data (e.g. recreation site inventories; solitude monitoring; invasive weed surveys); managing a wilderness/recreation crew, providing planning, training and problem-solving support

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
