Duties

Help
  • Performs the full range of overhaul and repair work from organizational to general support-level maintenance on wheel, track, commercial, industrial, automotive, engineer, special purpose and material handling equipment.
  • Troubleshoots defects, diagnoses malfunction, and determines type and extent of repair necessary.
  • Diagnoses and repairs all types of failures in electrical systems (6 to 24-volt) including ignition, lighting and power circuits using various devices and testing equipment.
  • Performs technical inspections of equipment, Maintenance Expenditure Limits, Maintenance Allocation Levels, total scope of repairs required to return items to a serviceable condition and accuracy and completeness of repairs.

  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will participate in drug urinalysis testing
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL).

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Applicants must have sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish the duties of the position. Such knowledge, skills, and abilities must be clearly documented in your resume and must demonstrate skill and ability to perform common tasks: performing repairs, replacements, and adjustments of parts and assemblies on heavy mobile equipment; testing and troubleshooting a variety of transmissions; and interpreting schematics and blueprints - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Incumbent works on top of or under heavy-duty vehicles in cramped or awkward positions, and performs work on lighter vehicles while the vehicle is overhead and where parts worked on are in hard to reach places. Incumbent may frequently lift parts and equipment weighing 20-50 pounds and/or puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Lifting and moving of heavier items is made with the assistance of others and/or with jacks, joists, and cranes.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and occasionally outside; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work is dirty, greasy and noisy; possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, and slipping tools. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors and involves frequent exposure to exhaust fumes.

About the Location: Fort Greely remote location of the Interior located in Delta Junction; approximately 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks, 365 miles northeast of Anchorage. Abundance of wildlife - fish, bear, moose, and caribou. Winter October to April, temperatures of 8 to minus 20°F with extreme lows of minus 50; summer temperatures rise into 70s/80s with up to 22 hours of daylight.
