WHAT DOES A COMPUTER OPERATIONS SPECIALIST-TOIS-ECRIMES TSC STUDENT VOLUNTEER DO? The Student Volunteer gains work experience in the area of Technology Operations and Investigative Systems (TOIS)-Electronic Crimes Technical Support Center (TSC) - within the law enforcement component of the IRS where Computer Science intersects Investigative Digital Forensics. The IRS Student Volunteer Program is designed to give degree seeking students a unique opportunity to witness the Internal Revenue and work in a highly technical environment.
WHAT IS THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DIVISION?
Criminal Investigation is the investigative and law enforcement arm of the IRS. The American system of voluntary tax compliance relies heavily on self-assessments of what tax is owed. When individuals or corporations deliberately don't comply with the tax laws, Criminal Investigation responds with financial investigations and potential criminal prosecutions to promote compliance and confidence in the fairness of the tax system.
As a Computer Operations Specialist-TOIS-ECrimes TSC Student Volunteer, you will:
Assist Senior Investigative Analysts in the testing/documentation/validation of a wide variety of forensic tools and hardware
Prepare quality draft technical documents and training to assist investigators with new or existing tools
Perform original research on emerging devices
Assist in managing high computing GPU distributed cluster
Assist in configuring and documenting network appliances including firewalls, switches, and routers
Perform hardware and software reverse engineering
Assist in the development of forensic and management tools utilizing C#, ASP.NET, GTK+, and Python
Assist in automating and developing statistical reports
Prepare, secure, and deploy standardized operating systems for law enforcement investigative machines
Assist in creating test environments and test data for analysis
Assist in customizing Linux Distro built upon Slackware
Provide inventory assistance and asset control (including prepping obsolete equipment for survey)
Collaborate with others to accomplish goals
Communicate relevant and accurate information, clearly and concisely during formal or informal meetings
Follow procedures and established policies
Use various enterprise tools and technology to prepare and share documents

Student Volunteers may have an opportunity to travel locally with forensic examiners to tour other forensic laboratories. Local travel will be at students' expense.
Daily and weekly work schedules of 8-40 hoursper week are negotiable and will be determined upon completion of the Student Work Agreement.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS/ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: You must meet the following eligibility and basic requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
You must be a United States Citizen or National and be at least 18 years old. AND
Enrolled as a student on at least a half-time basis as defined by your educational institution and be in good academic standing as defined by your educational institution, AND
Submit proof of student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the student volunteer opportunity.
In addition to the above, student volunteer assignments will be determined based on field of study. You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student in Computer Science, Computer Information Technology, Computer Forensics, Digital Forensics or related fields at an accredited university/college with at least 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) of undergraduate course work completed.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: If applicable, you will be required to:
Selectees must submit official transcripts and proof of enrollment in a degree seeking program at an accredited university.
Student volunteers do not receive payment of any kind from the IRS.
Relocation expenses will not be paid.
Student must sign and adhere to the Internal Revenue Service Student Volunteer Program Agreement.
Students must be willing and able to travel at their own expense to carry out the Internship.
A representative from selectees' school must sign the Internal Revenue Service Student Volunteer Program Agreement form.
Must be a student in good academic standing as defined by institution.
Student is responsible for working with school academic advisor/counselor to request course credits for the IRS Student Volunteer program.
Student must maintain student eligibility and enrollment throughout the duration of the program. Must be actively enrolled at an accredited institution. Graduated students may not volunteer beyond his/her graduation date without proof of future enrollment in an accredited university.
The employment of any candidate, including a current employee or a new hire, selected for this position may be conditional upon classification and/or audit of federal tax returns. This audit may include up to 2 years of returns.
