The incumbent serves as the Director of Archives with primary responsibility for supervising the day-to-day activities of the Archives Branch. Responsibility includes oversight for special collections of accessioned, historical manuscripts, microfilmed historical records, governmental archives obtained from abroad; and Federal records created by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and Council.

Duties

Help

  • Provides administrative and technical oversight to the day-to-day operations of the Archives Branch.
  • Appraises archival material offered to the Museum and assesses needed preservation measures.
  • Approves and implements disposition policies and procedures for non-permanent and duplicative materials.
  • Participates in planning survey trips for foreign repositories.
  • Supervises archives staff in the entry of cataloging descriptions into a computerized cataloging system.
  • Implements and directs the Museum's institutional records program.
  • Meets and corresponds with potential donors of archival materials to determine the appropriateness of acquiring such material for the USHMM archives.
  • Monitors the compilation finding aids of Holocaust-related records located at other repositories.

Qualifications

At the GS-14 grade level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level. Specialized experience is experience a) performing exacting research in a wide range of archival materials and related manuscripts in various languages; b) arranging and/or overseeing arranging of collections; c) overseeing or performing preservation measures on archival collections relating to the Holocaust, its background and aftermath; d) ensuring adequate intellectual control over holdings; e) cataloging and other descriptions, including registration information; f) analyzing and interpreting non-current records to appraise their value; and/or performing comparable duties.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

1. Professional knowledge of the fundamental principles and theoretical concepts of archival work.
2. Knowledge of Holocaust history and the significant events involved, including the documentation practices for the total period.
3. Working knowledge of the German language or another language directly related to the history of the Holocaust, such as Polish, Russian, French, Yiddish or Hebrew in order to appraise, organize, describe and perform reference on documents.
4. Ability to supervise and manage others.
5. Ability to communicate orally and in writing in order to develop archival policies and procedures, make recommendations and presentations and to serve as spokesperson for the Branch.
6. Ability to organize, analyze and interpret non-current records and assess their value.
7. Knowledge of relevant holdings and available finding aids in other Foreign and domestic archival institutions.
