Duties

Help

As a Student Trainee (Land Survey) you will

  • Assist in performing Survey using full filed to finish mode.
  • Assist with and/or plan and conduct simple and routine survey or small pieces of large survey projects.
  • Prepare draft field notes, plats, reports and other administrative documents that document assigned work.

  • Physical Demands: Work is in an office setting or out-of -doors involving extensive hiking, carrying heavy loads, and cutting and clearing brush and debris with axes, brush hooks, and chain saws.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must:Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or higher.Be at least 18 years of age or older for an arduous or hazardous duty position.In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education, specialized experience, and/or both - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

- Specialized experience: have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include serve as the head of small party on routine surveying assignments utilizing a variety of survey equipment including total stations, data collectors, hand held calculators, and GPS receivers. OR
- Education: have one year of graduate-level education in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering with surveying option/emphasis. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR
- Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) and completion of a bachelor degree. SAA is defined as: (1) class standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university or major subdivision; OR (2) grade point average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on my official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B " or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision). Must submit a copy of your transcript and proof of GPA computation, Class standing, or Honor Society membership. OR
- A combination of education and experience as listed above.

  • This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled).
  • This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than 1 year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements, and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date.
  • The agency may noncompetitively convert a Career/Indefinite Intern who is a U. S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets all agency program requirements and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the target occupational series at the time of completing all education requirements.
  • To be eligible for conversion, interns must: Be a US citizen; complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquires through the Internship program; complete degree or certificate program; meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted; meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement; perform their job successfully; and receive favorable recommendation for conversion from supervisor.

  • Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
  • If the position is filled at the lower grade level, subsequent promotion to the next higher grade level per the target full performance is permissible without further competition. The promotion is not guaranteed but dependent upon administrative approval and the agency's continuing need for an actual assignment and performance at the higher level duties.
  • The entire period served as a Career/Indefinite Intern counts as the appointee's trial period. Prior Federal civilian service is credited toward the completion of the required trial period in the same manner as prescribed in 5 CFR 315.802.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above. Eligible and qualified applicants who receive a score that range from 70 to 100 will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.   • Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, guidelines, and policies concerning cadastral surveys and standard methods and practices for performing survey computations.
  • Knowledge of Land Surveying practices and procedures, including reading and interpreting survey records and deeds and evaluating and correlating information from residents and private surveyors with physical survey evidence to restore or reestablish obliterated corners.
  • Ability to utilize word processing, computer aided drafting (CAD), and other subject specific software for the preparation of final draft field returns, technical reports or routine surveys.
