Summary

This position is located in the National Agricultural Library for the Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, MD.

In this position, you will serve as a nutrition specialist in the Nutrition and Food Safety Program, supporting the Nutrition.gov website and Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC).

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years

Duties

Help
  • As a specialist in the area of nutrition, participates in the formulation and development of the NFSP policies, programs and operations.
  • Participate in the development and management of the library collection in the specialized fields relating to food and human nutrition.
  • Ensure all information shared with the public over the internet is appropriate, timely and accurate.
  • Manage reference services for the food and nutrition program, including the use of online reference systems such as Ref Tracker or other systems

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:
1412 Series:
A full 4-year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with major study in the related field of the physical sciences, nutrition, or clinical dietetics and nutrition

OR

Four years of experience that provided a knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, and terminology in an agriculture, biological or physical sciences field; an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in the subject-matter field. Such experience must have been equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4-year college curriculum.

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-12
Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and projects related to nutrition; and organizing and disseminating technical information on food and nutrition to the public.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.   • Applies Technology to Tasks: Selects and understands procedures, machines, or tools that will produce the desired results; identifies or solves problems in machines, computers, or other technologies as they are related to performing tasks.
