Assesses patients and families for a variety of psychiatric and emotional concerns with particular attention to those concerns in the context of the patient's family and community.
Develops interventions based on above needs assessments and exercises; assists patient and family in negotiating with healthcare providers and other community human service providers regarding healthcare decisions and concerns; coordinates and arranges placement of patients requiring long-term care.
Provides education to patients, their families, hospital staff and other interested community members on mental health mailers such as depression, child abuse, parenting and grief and others.
Complies reports when necessary and assists local agencies in interpreting these reports.
Takes leadership role in assessing and responding to community adults/families service needs.
Works in collaboration with the supervisor to develop social work/counseling services.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Incumbent must speak both English and Navajo Languages and have a thorough knowledge of Navajo Culture.

Incumbent is required to have a valid State Driver's License to operate a Government Owned or leased motor vehicle.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Degree: Social Work. Must fulfill all of the requirements for the Master's Degree in Social Work in a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Master's degree with practicum, applicants who complete all of the requirements for a master's degree in social work that included a practicum are eligible for the GS-09 level.
Licensure: Applicants applying at the GS-11 grade level MUST submit a copy of an unrestricted/unexpired license for Social Work.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education. Candidates must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level to qualify for the GS-11 grade level.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that, is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of the type of specialized experience that are creditable are providing direct patient care assessing and evaluating patients using a patient/family-centered approach for needs such as financial assistance, discharge planning/coordination, long-term care placement, in-home care issues, abuse screening and referral and other psychosocial concerns related to health care.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.
