Summary

NASA's Pathways Recent Graduate Program provides an opportunity for you to gain experience in the Federal civil service at the beginning of your career. This position is for an Aerospace Engineer in the Safety Office in the Suborbital and Special Orbital Project at GSFC Wallops Flight Facility (Wallops Island, VA). As an entry level engineer, the employee will perform assignments designed to increase knowledge and skill in safety assignments.

Individuals who have graduated from an accredited educational insitution within the last two years. Veterans who were unable to apply for Pathways Recent Graduate jobs due to active military service are eligible for two years after release or discharge from active duty, up to six years after completing degree requirements.

Duties

Help
  • You will perform tasks related to the safety of aeronautical and aerospace systems to ensure that projects conducted under the auspices of the Suborbital Projects and Operations Directorate are conducted within accepted risk limits.
  • You will review and analyze aerospace and aeronautical systems and/or associated ground and support equipment using safety engineering techniques for rocket, balloon, aircraft, and UAS programs through definition, design and development, and launch.
  • You will perform safety analyses to identify and document hazards and risks to facilities, equipment and systems.
  • You will review and analyze hazardous subsystems such as pressure systems, mechanical and electrical systems, explosive and flammable systems, and other systems, to develop risk analysis, safety assessments, and safety plans.

  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment.

  • You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Recent Graduate appointment.
  • You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
  • You must meet eligibility requirements by the date of appointment.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-9 level, in addition to the basic educational requirement, you must meet one of the criteria listed under educational qualifications.

-OR

A bachelor's degree in one of the preferred fields with at least 1 year of specialized experience.

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is defined as professional working experience that included the following:

GS-07: Specialized experience at the GS-05 level is applying technical skills to support problem solving in the areas of safety, operations, hazard assessment, and/or engineering.

GS-09: Specialized experience at the GS-07 level is (1) is applying technical skills to support problem solving in the areas of safety, operations, hazard assessment, and/or engineering; AND (2) interpreting data using scientific and computational methods to resolve issues.

You will only be considered for the highest grade for which you qualify.

Education

To qualify for the GS-9 level, you must have a master's degree.

OR

A bachelor's degree with at least 1 year of specialized experience.

Basic Education Requirement: A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

You must indicate your major as well as your degree in order to receive full consideration for this position.

If you are using education completed outside of the U.S. to meet the qualifications for this position, you must have it evaluated by a credential evaluation service to determine if it is comparable to education from accredited U.S. institutions. If you are selected, you must provide a written evaluation of your foreign education to the human resources office. If you do not provide the written evaluation, you may be found unqualified for the position.

Additional information

As identical vacancies are identified, additional selections may be made.

You will be placed in a dynamic, one-year career development program, and provided with a mentor and an individual training plan that may include specialized training, formal rotational assignments, and other developmental activities. If you successfully complete the program, you may be converted to a term or permanent position. Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion. At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If a Recent Graduate appointee is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.

The Recent Graduate may be converted to an Aerospace Engineer with promotion potential to the GS-13 level.
