Duties

Help

The mission of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration's (TIGTA) Office of Investigations is to protect the Internal Revenue Service from internal and external threats and corruption that could negatively impact the IRS’ ability to administer the nation’s tax laws. We detect and deter waste, fraud and abuse in IRS programs and operations and protect the IRS against internal misconduct and corruption as well as external attempts to corrupt or threaten its employees. We provide independent oversight to the Treasury Department on matters involving IRS activities & the IRS Office of Chief Counsel.

As a criminal investigator, you will be called upon to spearhead the largest, most complex, and most sensitive criminal and occasionally non-criminal investigations which come under the jurisdiction of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).

As a Investigative Specialist (Cybercrimes), you will:

  • Actively participate in investigations with special agents to plan major enforcement operations. Attend and receive briefings concerning the subjects under investigation, intelligence information available at that time and objectives of the investigation.

  • Perform analytic tasks of a high level of difficulty. Develop new methods, procedures, drive and present policy changes and agency wide strategies to locate, sort, evaluate and collect information in a forensically sound manner.

  • Monitor, operate, maintain, analyze, and suggest modifications and/or configurations to network surveillance devices which provide evidentiary support activities into intrusions of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) systems or situations where a computer or other electronic means is used in the commission of a crime.
  • Create programs to support legally sufficient forensic data recovery activities, in compliance with generally recognized federal law enforcement and Department of Justice standards, in support of investigations.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized experience: For the GS-14, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Applying applicable criminal laws and Federal rules dealing with technical, electronic processes and procedures employed in support of a wide array of technical aspects as they relate to investigations; AND
  • Developing new methods, procedures, drive and present policy changes and agency wide strategies regarding the collection of evidence in a forensically sound manner; AND
  • Analyzing major conspiratorial-type investigations spanning multiple states and/or agencies and provides authoritative, complete reports sufficient to be used in prosecutions.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-14, you must have been at the GS-13 level for 52 weeks.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Top Secret – Background Investigation will be required.
