Summary

This position is located in USDA/ARS - Field Organization; Pacific West Area; Fruit & Vegetable Insect Research Unit located in Wapato, WA.

As a Biological Science Laboratory Technician, you will apply the basic principles of biological science (e.g., plant pathology, plant physiology, entomology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, etc.) of the research being conducted in the organization.

Duties

Help
  • Research project objectives sufficient to plan the technical aspects of experimental design and execution.
  • Operate and maintain complex equipment systems common to the specific area of research which must be calibrated and synchronized to achieve desired results.
  • Adapt, develop or improve techniques and procedures.
  • Independently initiates action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results, or recommends resolution to supervisor.
  • Apply thorough knowledge of the processes, methods, procedures and management practices necessary to perform a full range of complex duties in area of assignment.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

GS-05:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience is fulfilled by the following: Under close supervision, conduct research activity or control program work; Assess various test readings, and; Read and document measurements.

OR

EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION:

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position (e.g. Biology).

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Combination of specialized experience and education as described above, such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of required education equals 100%. (Note: only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable.) To calculate, first determine your total number of semester hours beyond the first 60, and divide that number by 60. Next, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now add your percentages of education and experience. The two percentages must total at least 100% for you to qualify based on your combination of education and experience.

GS-06:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience is fulfilled by the following: Research activity or control program work; Assess various test readings; Read and document measurements; Execute tests, and; Make observations.

OR

EDUCATION SUBSTITUION:

One year of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position and demonstrates that I possess the knowledge, skills and abilities described above.

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Combination of specialized experience and directly related graduate level education as described above, such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of required education equals 100%. To calculate, first determine your total number of graduate semester hours, and divide that number by 9. Next, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now add your percentages of education and experience. The two percentages must total at least 100% for you to qualify based on your combination of education and experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands - The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

Work Environment - The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.
