Help

In this trainee level position you will this position is to perform law enforcement activities which will identify, monitor, direct resources to apprehend, and detain those suspected of violating federal law and/or regulations.

This position starts at a salary of $41,868.00 (GS-5, Step 1) to $60,278.00 (GS-7, Step 10) with promotion potential to $60,278 (GL-12 Step 10).

Your duties will include:

  • Assisting higher-graded law enforcement officers with collecting and processing of evidence and interviewing violators and witnesses to collect additional information and/or evidence.
  • Assisting in the apprehension of suspected smugglers, the seizure of the vehicles, aircraft, or marine vessels in which the contraband is being transported.
  • Assisting higher-graded officers with generating information by utilizing a range of investigative techniques including interviewing, examining physical evidence.
  • Contributing to narrative reports regarding the actions and judgments made prior to, during, and after an apprehension/seizure is made.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GL-5 grade level if you possess 3 years of general experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Communicating in writing sufficient to produce logical, and grammatically correct in-depth narrative reports.
  • Assisting in the initiation and control of law enforcement activities.
  • Collecting and processing evidence and interviews violators and witnesses to collect additional information and/or evidence.
  • Assisting in establishing, maintaining, and improving productive relationships with other Federal, State, and local law enforcement personnel.
Experience: You qualify for the GL-7 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
  • Contributing to narrative reports regarding the actions and judgments made prior to, during, and after an apprehension/seizure is made.
  • Participating in coordinated activities such as specific area searches, warrant serving, and raids.
  • Serving as an aircrew member of a helicopter, propeller, or jet aircraft.
  • Operating aircraft -mounted sensors, infrared detection systems, and aerial communications equipment

Class standing
-- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.

Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.
  1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
  2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies.

Graduate Education:1 full year of graduate level in an accredited college or university. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirement. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 11/21/2019.

In order to be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. In addition to the application and application questionnaire, this position requires an online assessment. The online assessment measures critical general competencies required to perform the job. The assessment includes a cut score based on the minimum level of required proficiency in these critical general competencies. You must meet or exceed the cut score to be considered. Polygraph Examination: The Aviation Enforcement Agent position is a polygraph-required position. If you are not a current CBP employee in a law enforcement position, you may be required to take a polygraph exam and have favorable results in order to continue in the pre-employment process. Polygraph Reciprocity: CBP may accept the results of a prior federal polygraph exam in lieu of a CBP polygraph exam. You will receive information to request reciprocity in your Background Investigation Package.

Polygraph Waiver: Certain veterans may be eligible to obtain a polygraph waiver. You will receive information to request a waiver in your Background Investigation Package.

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency wavier by meeting one or more of the following conditions:
  • Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
  • A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government
  • Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university
  • Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government
Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Age Requirement: Pursuant to Public Law 110-161, this position is covered under enhanced retirement provisions for Aviation Enforcement Agent positions which allows for the imposition of a maximum age requirement. In accordance with DHS Directive 252-08, the day before an individual's 37th birthday is the maximum age for original appointment to a position as a Aviation Enforcement Agent.Creditable law enforcement officer service covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C 8412(d), or Law Enforcement service under Public Law 110-161 may be applied toward the maximum age requirement.The maximum age for original appointment articulated above shall not apply to the hiring of individuals entitled to veterans preference eligibility under 5 U.S.C. § 3312.

FAA Class II Medical Certificate: An FAA Class II Medical Certificate dated within the last 12 months is require prior to Entrance on Duty (EOD) in this position.

Fitness Standards: You must meet job related fitness standards.Uniforms: This position requires you to wear an officially approved uniform while in a duty status.Motor Vehicle Operation: You must possess and maintain a current valid state driver's license.

Mobility: You are required to sign a mobility agreement and be willing to relocate as necessary.

Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP): You must be readily accessible/willing to work on an unscheduled basis in excess of a 40-hour workweek; you will receive extra compensation (LEAP) which is 25% of base pay.

Basic Training: You may be required to attend Air and Marine Basic Training (AMBT) at the Federal Law Enforcement Academy (FLETC).

Swimming Requirement: You also will be required to participate in an untested swim/water survival course that has been incorporated into the Air and Marine Basic Training technical skills requirements. The ability to tread water and swim with, and without, flotation devices for extended periods of time will be an essential part of the training.Additionally, selectees are required to complete the following training programs: (1) Spanish Training Course at a designated CBP Language Facility; (2) Initial Survival Training Course, training location to be determined by CBP.
