Duties

Help
  • Collect, prepare, evaluate, and verify samples and supporting records.
  • Maintain records and locate and compile data and other information from various sources.
  • Keep detailed records of experimental data.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and modify equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data using personal computers and software packages.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the positions to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for these positions are:

At The GS-05:
Qualifying experience for the GS-5 position includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-4 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience researching and collecting biological data; following standard research procedures; and utilizing biological research equipment in a laboratory environment.

OR

Education: A full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related. Related courses may include inorganic chemistry, organismal biology, microbiology, parasitology, physiology, zoology, epidemiology, or food science.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At The GS-06:
Qualifying experience for the GS-06 position includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in an experiment or research project related to the study of animals or parasites by researching and evaluating biological data; following standard research procedures; and utilizing biological research equipment in a laboratory environment.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education that included coursework inorganic chemistry, organismal biology, microbiology, parasitology, physiology, zoology, epidemiology, or food science, or other biological courses provided they placed an emphasis on the study of microbiology, parasitology, food safety, or epidemiology.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At The GS-07:
Qualifying experience for the GS-07 position includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in an experiment or research project related to the study of animals or parasites by researching and evaluating biological data; adapting, modifying or developing new research techniques or procedures; utilizing biological research equipment to diagnose infections or characterize biological samples; and preparing solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education that included coursework inorganic chemistry, organismal biology, microbiology, parasitology, physiology, zoology, epidemiology, or food science, or other biological courses provided they placed an emphasis on the study of microbiology, parasitology, food safety, or epidemiology.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 9 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
