Duties

Help
  • Performs the full range of operations, troubleshooting and repair of heating water pumps, chilled water pumps and circulation pumps.
  • Performs work on electrical, heating, ventilation, and plumbing trades.
  • Maintains, repairs and performs operational checks on ventilation equipment, water heaters, steam and hot water systems, air conditioning, and gas fired furnaces.
  • Performs some plumbing on water, air, gas pipes using stainless steel, plastic, copper and brass pipes.
  • Replaces or repairs items such as bearings, belts, steam traps, flood control valves, pipe insulation, pumps, and electrical and plumbing fixtures.

  • Must be able to obtain or maintain a valid state drivers license.
  • May be called in nights and weekends to make or assist in emergency repairs.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a State of Iowa Backflow Prevention certification.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an asbestos certification with entrance/exit safety protocols for specific areas of the center.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to varying abnormal temperatures and conditions, both indoors and outside buildings.
  • Works in areas where equipment is in continual operation, noise levels are abnormal and odors prevail.
  • Subject to infection, mechanical injury, gas, cuts, bruises, fumes, dirt and grease.
  • Changes to clothing provided by center while at work duty station.
  • May be required to shower prior to reporting to duty station and/or in accordance.
  • Must wear a full face respirator when working in biological control areas; restrictions of facial hair may be imposed for proper use of personal protective equipment.
Physical Effort
  • Work requires active walking, prolonged periods of standing, climbing, stooping, bending, crawling and working in cramped positions or crowded areas.
  • May be required to lift equipment up to 100 lbs.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of Materials
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Use of Measuring Instruments
