Summary

This position is located at the National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center in Franklin, Maine. The incumbent will provide direct professional support to the Research Leader (Supervisory Research Physiologist Animals) on the sea lice challenges for selectively bred Atlantic Salmon.

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years.

Duties

Help
  • Performs experiments in fish culture facilities and in the laboratory that are designed to provide answers for specific research problem areas.
  • Takes measurements and conducts analyses by applying established methods and procedures for aquatic animal genetic manipulation.
  • Determines proper experimental approach.
  • Modifies methods, if necessary, to solve problems or make improvements in experimental design. Devises experimental protocols to meet program objectives.
  • Analyzes experimental data according to established principles and procedures, and summarizes results in a form suitable for the first draft of a scientific journal publication.
  • Keeps abreast of current scientific advancement by reading literature, review articles, and attending supervisor approved meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Undertakes routine care, maintenance, and calibration of moderately complex laboratory instruments, e.g. UV-VIS spectrophotometer, flow cytometer, microscopic imaging system.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-10 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project or study related to marine aquaculture; maintaining and calibrating laboratory instruments; and assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment process.

OR

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree if directly related. Related degrees may include the biological sciences or fisheries science.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
