The work involves utilizing a wide variety of complex techniques for ongoing programs and many one-of-a-kind special projects that require use of current state-of-the-art GIS equipment and technology.
Serves as Geographic Information System (GIS) Coordinator promoting mapping and technical services and establishing relationships throughout the District and region.
Serves as a technical POC for Civil Works and military projects as well as support for other Divisions and projects with the development and implementation of District GIS and/or Geospatial Data implementation plans.
Ensures all mapping and GIS products adhere to all relevant standards and regulations. Ensures all geospatial data metadata files are completed and submitted to the National Spatial Data Clearinghouse according to guidelines.
Develops and analyzes civil works and military related data for flood control projects, engineering design, flood insurance studies, and other projects.
Attends professional meetings, seminars and training courses to maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of technical advances and applications in the areas of surveying, mapping and GIS.
Travels to project locations for the purpose of training, demonstrating capabilities of GIS technology, and interfacing with customers to determine the content and structure of their GIS database requirements.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires a valid state driver's license.

Basic Requirement for Geographer:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Planning, developing and managing work plans to execute mapping and GIS tasks necessary to support a variety of projects; promoting and marketing mapping and geospatial capabilities internally and externally to organization; developing and reviewing digital data and map products for a variety of customers and disciplines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
