Summary

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Office work is performed indoors and is mostly sedentary with some physical exertions.  Field work is performed outdoors in conditions that include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, heavy rains, and insects; to include wet, muddy, or rocky surfaces.  Positions require physical exertions, such as, hiking, crouching, and stooping, reaching, or similar activities.  Individuals should be able to work alone or with other people, during day/night hours.

Duties

Help

Cartographic Technicians operate computer equipment to digitize line and point data and generate geographic information system (GIS) maps. Develops new transportation maps from ortho photos and notes; works from rough drawings, sketches, GIS data files and verbal instructions; and prepares intricate, detailed, small scale location exhibits on finished maps and plats. Responsibility includes drafting both by hand and in AUTOCAD.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume.

GS-05 - one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include compiling information from specified sources; assembling and sorting material into a complete map; and researching office records for ownership status, cadastral survey grid layout and land classifications for display on maps; OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (180 quarter or 120 semester hours) that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences, e.g., physical geography or geodesy. Examples of acceptable courses include cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.

GS-06 - one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include drafting selected cadastral and mineral survey plats from field notes; researching surface and mineral status of land; and researching surface and mineral status of land holdings by numerous federal and state agencies; OR successful completion of one year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate study which included coursework directly related to the work of the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.

GS-07 - one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include performing cartographic, drafting and limited illustration work; and extracting information from field notes to prepare various graphic materials, numerical data recorded in field notes and convert to graphic presentations; OR successful completion of one year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate study which included coursework directly related to the work of the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements.  Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume.
