The Division of Medicine at the VA Healthcare System, Salisbury NC is seeking a physician leader for Section Chief of the Cardiology Program. The position will have a joint appointment between the VA and Wake Forest School of Medicine. Applicants should have the academic qualifications for faculty appointment at Wake Forest University School of Medicine at the Associate Professor or Professor level.The cardiology program at the Salisbury VA Healthcare System provides complex inpatient and outpatient services with dedicated support staff and operational space.

The incumbent will provide oversight of cardiology operations at three clinical sites (Kernersville VA Healthcare Center, Salisbury VA Medical Center and Charlotte VA Healthcare Center), and will be assisted by physician program managers at each of the sites who will function as first line supervisors for the respective sites.

The Section Chief will be responsible for short and long term planning, budget management, quality improvement functions, inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and clinical operations, and the day to day management of special programs such as the only free standing diagnostic cardiac catheterization laboratory in the VHA and EP lab (at the Kernersville site).

Responsibilities will include supervision of cardiologists, midlevel providers, matrix management of nursing and technical staff, and oversight of the rotating cardiology fellows from the Wake Forest School of Medicine.The Section Chief will also be expected to develop an externally funded clinical, translational, or health services research program, in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Research Center, Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Department of Internal Medicine at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday: Schedule negotiable upon interview)

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2020.
Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Preferred candidates will be Board Eligible/Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology and have experience in managing all cardiac disease processes. Additional experience in teaching and research is desirable.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: A pre-placement examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies.
