Summary

You will serve as a Museum Specialist in the Collections Management Section, Curator Branch, Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) at the Collection Management Facility in Richmond, VA. You will work with a team of museum professionals documenting, researching, cataloging, and rehousing artifact collections. You will perform all functions related to cataloging and inventory control for the collection of over 300,000 artifacts which represent the history of the U.S. Navy.

Duties

Help
  • You will be part of a team of museum specialists and technicians responsible for researching, cataloging, re-housing, and inventory control for the headquarters artifact collection including textiles, personal artifacts, ship's bells, plaques, etc.
  • You will routinely utilize the Department of the Navy Heritage Asset Management System (DONHAMS)/EMu to research artifacts in the collection, catalog artifacts in the collection, update artifact location information and prepare a variety of reports.
  • You will properly handle all artifacts and create storage solutions for a wide range of artifact types for both long-term storage and transportation.
  • You will contribute to projects and assignments that require good teamwork, good communication skills, planning and logistics.
  • You will perform a variety of duties related to facilities management, including submitting and tracking work orders, recording storage climate data, and general facilities needs.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen-out ineligible applicants. This screen-out is: Do you have one-year of demonstrated experience performing tasks associated with processing and managing museum collections including inventorying, cataloging into a collection management database, photographing, labeling, and rehousing artifacts and researching provenance utilizing accession files, technical, and scholarly sources?

GS-09 Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Identifying, documenting, and cataloging artifact collections of historical significance for display and storage; 2) Utilizing various computer programs and databases to prepare a wide variety of reports and inventories utilized by the museum; 3) Managing a museum's collection in compliance with directives and standards set by the American Alliance of Museums; and 4) Determining the immediate and long-term care requirements for artifacts, including cleaning, assembly, preservation, and storage.

GS-07 Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Assisting with the collecting, processing, cleaning, sorting, packing, and shipping of a museum's collections; 2) Entering collections information into automated databases to maintain accurate inventory and reporting; 3) Reviewing collections inventory records for consistency and accuracy with existing records; and 4) Providing routine maintenance and cleaning of a museum's storage spaces and exhibits.

Education


The following can be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualification requirements of this position:

GS-09 Level: You must have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study including art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled; or successfully completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a related field of study including art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled; or have a combination of experience and graduate education as described that equates to one year of experience (the percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent).

GS-07 Level: You must have successfully completed one full year of related graduate level education including art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled; or successfully completed a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement in a related field of study including art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled; or have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience (the percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent).
