  • Develop and/or modify established procedures for recording information about native plant populations and communities, and invasive species survey, treatment and monitoring in order to meet Regional and National standards.
  • Performs field work which includes conducting surveys, treatment and monitoring of invasive vegetation and inventories of native plant populations and communities in compliance with selected protocols for invasive plant and botanical resources.
  • Work with internal and external partners to provide the documentation and coordination necessary for the effective management of invasive plants and threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species.
  • Assists the Forest or Zone Botanist in the management of special status botanical species (including vascular plants, nonvascular plants, lichens, and fungi) by conducting surveys and preparing reports

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:
GS-0430
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-7 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: Participated in the treatment of invasive plant using a variety of methods. Participated in native plant community restoration projects. Studied and prepared sections of reports on invasive, threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management. Prepared samples and performed data analysis. Collected and summarized plant data; OR one full year of graduate level education; OR an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience; OR Superior Academic Achievement (to determine if you are eligible, go to: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/policy/ApplicationOfStds-04.asp). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

For the GS-9 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: Participated in or assisted with the planning and implementation of invasive plant treatments using a variety of methods. Participated in or assisted with the planning and implementation of native plant community restoration projects. Participated in the evaluation and monitoring of the invasive plant and threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management programs. Located, surveyed, identified, and recorded threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species information in order to meet environmental assessment requirements. Collected and summarized data and administered plant species projects; OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
