Duties

Help

As a Environmental Health Scientist, you will:

Serve as an Environmental Health Scientist (within a multidisciplinary team) specifically responsible for evaluating, providing information, or developing hypotheses regarding the pathways of chemical exposure to humans.

Provide evaluation of imminent health threats associated with emergency releases of toxic and radioactive wastes and other chemical incidents.

Prepare and participate in the development of public health assessments, health consultations and/or related activities concerning potential or actual adverse health effects associated with exposure to chemicals and hazardous substances.

Participate in the evaluation of hazardous waste sites to include recommendations concerning site specific environmental and human biologic sampling strategies, selection of environmental surveillance protocols, radiation monitoring, and characterization of environmental pathways.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: GS-11/12
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Minimum Qualifications: GS-11

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in assisting in the development of public health assessments involving hazardous substance exposure, environmental, or public health issues.

OR

Substitution of Education for Experience for GS-11:

Requirements at the GS-11 level may be met by having completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to the position.

OR

Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate education that together meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.
