Summary

This scientist serves the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute (ALWRI) which is housed under the Rocky Mountain Research Station in Missoula, Montana. ALWRI is dedicated to the development and dissemination of knowledge needed to improve management of wilderness, wildlands, wild and scenic rivers and similarly protected areas.

Duties

Help
  • Develop and apply knowledge about factors that influence the nature and magnitude of biophysical and social impacts of human activities in wilderness or other wildlands.
  • Author science publications in the field of wilderness management or the role of wilderness or other protected areas in social and ecological systems.
  • Conceive and formulate research supporting or leading to studies by others.
  • Disseminate research results through multiple avenues including lectures, peer-reviewed scientific journals, technical reports and research papers, conference presentations, and popular literature.
  • Integrate spatial and temporal variation (local to national to international; across time through multiple studies) in human uses of wilderness and other wildlands and benefits of wilderness protection.
  • Use statistics, qualitative analysis, simulation modelling, geospatial analyses, spatial data (including social media), and/or field data to characterize and predict current and future wilderness use, recreation, and impacts.
  • Archive science products (data, study plans, coding manuals, reports and papers).
  • Lead science teams to discover and synthesize knowledge to support natural resource planning and management applications that contribute to the preservation of wild, natural and unconfined conditions and quality human experiences in wilderness.
  • Transfer research findings through workshops and/or field visits to help wilderness leaders and recreation managers manage visitor capacity and use.

Basic Requirement for Social Science series (0101):
Degree:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
--OR--
Experience:
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
--OR--
Combination of education and experience
that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related graduate education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience or Graduate Education Requirement for GS-12 level:
At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. To qualify at this grade level, your specialized experience for this position must include all of the following:
--Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in one or more of the following areas: social-ecological systems research, wilderness recreation, outdoor recreation, conflict management as related to land management, wildlands policy, water-based benefits from wilderness, human dimensions of wildlife, and/or natural resource conservation;
--Field level data collection, study plan development, and obtaining peer reviews on draft articles and reports related to the scientific field above; AND
--Demonstration of technology transfer abilities through methods such as training, developing step-by-step guides to monitoring, or guides to supporting land management planning requirements; and, disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results as primary author in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
--OR--
A conferred Ph.D. in one or more research areas directly related to the work of the position which includes social science as related to forestry, parks, tourism and recreation management, wildlife management or policy, environmental studies, wilderness management, research methods, statistical learning, statistical methods, and/or econometrics or psychometrics.

Specialized Experience Requirements for GS-13 level:
At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Graduate level education alone is not qualifying at this grade level. You must possess the specialized experience described to qualify.To qualify at this grade level, your specialized experience for this position must include all of the following:
--Conducting a diversity or body of research as a Principal Investigator or project member on multiple studies that include the full cycle of scientific research (i.e. identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in one or more of the following areas: social-ecological systems research, wilderness recreation, outdoor recreation, conflict management as related to land management, wildlands policy, water-based benefits from wilderness, human dimensions of wildlife, and/or natural resource conservation;
--Conducting social-ecological analyses of threats from a changing environment to the relationships between biophysical attributes of public lands and people, disseminating results in peer-reviewed journals or other appropriate outlets; AND
--Creating products or information with application for the management or planning of wilderness, parks or other protected areas, through co-development of knowledge with managers and planners.

Specialized Experience Requirements for GS-14 level:
At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Graduate level education alone is not qualifying at this grade level. You must possess the specialized experience described to qualify.
To qualify at this grade level, your specialized experience for this position must include all of the following:--Leading and conducting a diversity or body of research as a Principal Investigator or team member on multiple research teams including the full cycle of scientific research (i.e. identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in one or more of the following areas: social-ecological systems research, wilderness recreation, outdoor recreation, conflict management as related to land management, wildlands policy, water-based benefits from wilderness, human dimensions of wildlife, and/or natural resource conservation;--Leading cooperative research with academic or land management partners related to the status, threats, social benefits, or management of protected areas or other public lands; AND
--Functioning as a science leader in one or more fields, exemplified by editorship for a scientific journal; service as a chair, co-chair, or vice chair of a scientific society; or convening scientific workshops, organizing symposia, or other appropriate activities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position.
