Duties

Help

As a Transportation Specialist, you will:

  • Direct the maintenance of vehicles and the garage.
  • Assign personnel or utilize local firms to clean and wash vehicles, or to assist the mechanic as necessary. Oversee the maintenance of the area.
  • Dispatch vehicles, assigning driver and selecting proper vehicle for  specific  trips;  advise driver, when necessary, of shortest route to destination; consolidate trips by merging one or more  driving  assignments,  designating  nearby  destinations  for  minimum  use  of  vehicles  and driver;  scheduling  arrival  and  departure deadlines,  involving accurate  timing  of  trips  due  to unpredictable traffic and weather conditions.
  • Plan and conduct the driver's road testing program for Midshipmen and other personnel who require regular and incidental driving permits.
  • Exercise responsibility for all administrative work of garage including evaluation of performance of drivers annually and evaluating submitted complaints prior to submission to management.

The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of motor transportation policies, procedures, and principles in sufficient to plan, establish, and monitor the United States Merchant Marine Academy Vehicles fleet program.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09, it must include:

  • Experience related to planning, organizing, and managing resources, and to research, interpret, and apply regulations, directives, and policies in order to effectively implement a vehicle fleet maintenance program.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Education, you must have:

  • Three years of progressively higher level graduate education in a field of study related to the work of this position leading to such a degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or LL.M., if related.
  • You can also qualify on a combination of higher level graduate education and matching experience. This experience and education must be fully documented in your resume. If using education to qualify, you must provide supporting graduate level transcripts.



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
