There are currently 2 full time positions available for Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists-MRI/CT at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City. As a Diagnostic Radiologic MRI-CT Technologist, the incumbent has the responsibility for the performance of Diagnostic Radiology (DRT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Tomography (CT) exams under the direction of the Radiologist. The incumbent works closely with the Lead Technologists, Chief Technologist, radiologists, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, personnel safety, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, patient satisfaction and safety. The incumbent is a fully functional MRI Technologist, DRT and performs computerized tomography (CT) axial and/or 3-D reconstruction scans utilizing both single and multi-slice scanners including drainage and biopsies.


Work Schedule: 2 shifts: Mon-Fri 7:45am - 4:30pm OR Mon-Fri 4:00pm-midnight. Tours to be discussed during interview process. This position will require the employee to work in other Radiology areas along with working some weekend, holiday and overtime shifts to provide coverage as needed for patient care.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
  • English Language Proficiency: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II,Chapter 2, Section D, Paragraph 5a.
Preferred Experience:
  1. Registered DRT thru ARRT with a higher level of certification in MRI and CT.
  2. Three years' experience as a DRT and minimum of one year MRI and CT experience is required for this position.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbal.

Grade Determinations: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-9 LEVEL: Completion of 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level (GS-8), that is directly related to the position to be filled and that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics needed to provide services as a diagnostic radiologic technologist.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of super conducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter into. The practitioner must have specific specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radiofrequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. The technologist requires knowledge of image acquisition in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). This subspecialty requires advanced ARRT certification.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9.
