As a Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
Lead strategic improvements to the NCEI archive based on principle users, leveraging principle user inputs and internal/external funding opportunities.
Support Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-NOP and GOES-R solar instruments such as the Solar X-ray lmager, X-ray Sensor, Solar Extreme Ultraviolet lmager, Extreme Ultraviolet and X-ray lrradiance Sensors, and Solar synoptic maps.
Participate in requirements development, and design reviews related to scientific stewardship of solar observations.
Contribute to discussions with NOAA principle users to ensure NCEl's archive is of the highest performance including National Weather Service/Space Weather Prediction Center, US Air Force 557th weather wing, US and international government, commercial and research communities. Provide solar domain subject matter expertise and space environmental assessments for space weather events.
Required to pass a background investigation and fingerprint check.
Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable (www.sss.gov).

This position requires a Public Trust Security Clearance.
This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel System (CAPS). This system replaced the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band.
The ZP-3 is equivalent to the GS-11/12.

To qualify for the 1301 series:
This position requires applicants to meet a Basic Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of specialized experience in order to be found minimally qualified. You MUST meet one of the following basic education requirements:
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
To qualify at the ZP-3 or GS-11 level:
One full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized Experience MUST include all of the following:
Implementing operational capabilities for the archive and electronic distribution of satellite data and science-quality data sets derived from satellite instrumentation in near-real-time.
Performing observations, analysis and predictions of space environment phenomena including solar disturbances and their effects on the earth.
OR
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related OR a combination of education and experience.
