Duties

Help
  • Support real-time mission operations for human space flight missions.
  • Support core engineering disciplines including Crew and Thermal Systems, Structural Engineering, Simulation, Avionics, Software, Robotics, Propulsion, Power, and Aeroscience and Flight Mechanics.
  • Supports design, analysis, fracture/fatigue, loads/dynamics, robotics hardware, test materials, electrical power systems, communication/tracking, autonomy, command/data handling, radiation and EEE parts, avionics, and propellants/spacecraft systems.
  • Determine trajectories for future human space flight missions.
  • Contribute to groundbreaking development work related to crew health, safety and performance.

  • Enrolled/accepted in an accredited educational institution
  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher
  • Maintain enrollment at least half time as defined by the institution
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9 on a 4.0 scale
  • Applicants must have an expected graduation date of no earlier than one calendar year from this closing date of this announcement
  • You will be expected to start on January 21, 2020 or August 17, 2020

Qualifications

Starting GS grade levels are determined by education level:

- For GS-4: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours).

- For GS-5: Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours).

- For GS-6: Completion of 3 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree (90 semester hours or 135 quarter hours).

- For GS-7: Completion of 4 academic years of study (or all the requirements) for a bachelor's degree and accepted into a master's program.

- For GS-9: Completion of 1 academic year of master's level education or acceptance into a Doctoral program.

- For GS-11: Completion of 1 year of Doctoral level study.

Education

You must be enrolled and pursuing degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or Computer Science. Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for this position. Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. *Note: Computer Science curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques; of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

For Computer Science majors, bachelors of arts degrees are not qualifying.

Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.

This position is part of the NASA Pathways Intern Program which is a formal training program.

The NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Pathways Intern Employment Program (IEP) provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. This program follows the Cooperative Education (Co-op) Model, which is a work/study program in which you can gain valuable work experience while completing your degree requirements.

In our program, you will alternate between terms at school and paid employment at JSC. The unique aspect of JSC's IEP is that each work tour, you will rotate into a new functional area. This job will help you gain invaluable work experience in several different areas before graduation.

You may be required to perform rotational assignments in various organizations. Additionally, this position
requires you to work a specific schedule such as one semester at school followed by one semester at NASA.

You must meet eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

You will only be considered at the highest grade for which you qualify.

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completing degree requirements provided they:
- Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale);
- Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements;
- Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
- Maintain acceptable performance.

Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion to a term or perm job.

The Intern may be converted to a term or permanent position wither promotion potential to the GS-13 level.
