Duties

Help
  • As a Health Physicist you will:
  • Provide comprehensive radiation exposure analyses to a large, identified and targeted population of exposed workers.
  • Conduct technical evaluations to assess the measured radiation exposure for individual and groups of nuclear workers.
  • Develop innovative radiation dose reconstruction techniques independently.
  • Consult with Other Physical Science Professionals and mentoring for lower level health physics staff (junior or entry level health physicist).
  • Prepare written and oral technical reports regarding radiation exposure of nuclear weapons workers.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR

2. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

AND
In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements, applicants must meet the minimum qualification in the specialized experience as stated below.

Minimum Qualification

GS-1306-12: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and dissemination of radiation control or dosimetry data for radiological operations.

GS-1306-13: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and dissemination of radiation control or dosimetry data for radiological operations; research, development, and/or implementation of radiation dose reconstruction methodologies; and providing advice and consultation on radiation related projects.

Documenting experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is credible, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or and SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record. In order to receive credit for experience in your resume that is not within the official series and grade level of your official position, you must provide a copy of the appropriate documentation of such experience as indicated above.

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements.
