Duties

Help
  • Make judgements of the animal's appearance and activities and reports obvious changes to the supervisor or higher grade worker.
  • Accomplish duties according to established methods and schedules, special instructions, and written SOPs.
  • Receive incoming animals from suppliers, sorts by weight and/or sex, and observes for general physical condition and for signs of naturally occurring illness.
  • Clean, descale, and sanitize laboratory animal racks, pens, and cages by hand when required.
  • Feed animals the appropriate amount and type of feed according to standard operating procedures or special instructions.
  • Change bedding/nesting material and dispenses it properly and with a frequency to assure it is clean and dry.
  • Scrub and sanitize animal room floors and walls according to specified schedules.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain hospital required immunizations including rabies, tetanus and influenza.
  • This position may require incumbent to provide coverage on weekends or holidays, depending on manpower availability. Coverage timeframe is Monday-Friday or Tuesday-Saturday; 0630-1530 or 1000-1830.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires moderate to heavy lifting.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Animal Caretaker~ without more than normal supervision. I can maintain inventory records for feed, bedding, and other supplies as required and prepare reports to supervisor regarding laboratory animals' food and water consumption. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • USE OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS (MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, ELECTRONIC, AS APPROPRIATE TO LINE OF WORK)
  • Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying feed materials weighing up to 75 pounds and frequently handling such items as feed trays weighing up to 20 pounds. Light physical effort is required to lift or handle docile animals. The incumbent is required to use greater strength or agility to capture and restrain stronger and more active animals commonly used in research in addition to handling animals (e.g., pigs) weighing up to 200 pounds and pushing carts and animal cage racks weighing up to 300 pound.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. Incumbent is often exposed to unpleasant odors and noises. The incumbent usually works on concrete floors and may be exposed to bites, scratches, and animal waste. May also be exposed to contagious diseases. May require contact with unpredictable or un-socialized animals, which exposes the incumbent to greater possibility from bites, scratches, and kicks.
