Summary

This position is in the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the VA Medical Center in North Little Rock, AR. The Health Science Specialist's role is to work closely with and provide a high level of support for Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) clinicians and investigators in the conduct of human subjects' research and/or the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative clinical models of care for older veterans.

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (366 days). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares and submits regulatory documents for geriatric human subject research projects.
  • Conducts ongoing intra- and inter-rater reliability testing of all project instruments to maintain a high level of data integrity for pre-protocol assessments.
  • Develops and maintains a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manual and adheres to this manual when administering and implementing the project protocol.
  • Utilizes and maintains an electronic record management system for each project to record all applicable recruitment, procedure, and interview data.
  • Provides ongoing monitoring of research projects and adheres to all applicable deadlines for submissions including adverse event reporting, annual reports and other reports required to maintain compliance.
  • Completes all aspects of the screening and recruitment process as stipulated in the project protocol and ensures that all patients/subjects included in the project meet all inclusion and no exclusion criteria.
  • Obtains appropriate documentation of informed consent before engaging in research-related activities with patients or family members; assures that informed consent and HIPAA forms have been properly signed and witnessed; assures that participants confidentiality and rights as a human research subject are protected.
  • Compiles and produces education and training materials; determines the contents needed for training binders for each project.
  • Monitors and evaluates quality of all data and uses proper approach for correcting all errors identified.
  • Performs other duties assigned as it relates to the position.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Must have a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. Note: You must provide a copy of your transcripts to receive consideration.

AND

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically related to the work of the position. Specialized experience includes working with geriatric research subjects/patients utilizing knowledge of research guidelines and applicable regulations and laws governing human subjects' research; completes the screening and recruitment process as stipulated in the project protocol and ensures that all patients/subjects included in the project meet all inclusion and no exclusion criteria.

OR

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. Note: You must provide a copy of your transcripts to receive consideration.

OR

COMBINATION OF BOTH EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Combinations of specialized experience and graduate education as described above that demonstrates my ability to perform the duties of the position. Note: Only graduate level education in excess of 1 year may be combined with experience. You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts with your application package.

Physical Requirements: Employee must be able and willing to work closely with older patients. You will encounter such patients/subjects in a nursing home are/hospital ward environment and outpatient settings. The physical demands of the job will include some of the following: assisting the patients/subjects in and out of beds or chairs, walking with and providing standby assistance to the patients/subjects, assisting them on and off of weight scales, bending over them in order to perform limited anthropometric measurements, and otherwise walking, standing, bending and carrying light items such as medical records, instructional materials, books and manuals through the hospital (e.g., from your office to the nursing home care· unit) throughout his or her tour of duty. You must also be able to safely perform blood-drawing procedures, (which will require coordinated use of two hands), drive an automobile, and see and hear clearly. The specialist must be able and willing to drive to interview sites as required.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
