Duties

Help

You will:

- Develop assessments of environmental pollutants;

- Provide expert epidemiologic advice and consultation to National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) and EPA management;

- Develop innovative methods for environmental assessments and apply them;

- Identify research to improve scientific assessments.

You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

Qualifications

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as assisting with the review and critical evaluation of published, peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies focusing on environmental or occupational exposures including analysis of individual study results and interpretation of evidence across sets of studies; or assisting with the design and analysis of epidemiologic/population-based health studies that measure and quantify the health effects of environmental exposures in human populations.

To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as reviewing and critically evaluating published, peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies focusing on environmental or occupational exposures including analysis of individual study results and interpretation of evidence across sets of studies; or designing and conducting (including data analysis) epidemiologic/population-based health studies that measure and quantify the health effects of environmental exposures in human populations.

Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:  1) Knowledge related to the principles, theories, and practices of epidemiologic studies; 2) Ability to serve as a technical authority in epidemiology; 3) Skill in oral communication; 4) Ability to adapt existing approaches and develop new approaches to current assessments; 5) Skill in analyzing scientific assessments; 6) Skill in written communication.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in the following:  major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences related to the work of this position.

Except in special circumstances, those new to the federal government will be hired at the starting salary (step 1) of the applicable grade range listed above.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
