Duties

Help

This is a permanent seasonal position that is at least 36 weeks per year, but not more than 50 weeks per year in duration. You will be placed in non-pay status at the end of each season and recalled to duty at the start of the following season.

-Directs and determines work specific assignments for three wage grade 5 personnel within a habitat management team structure.
-Leads and works with team to control destructive, depredating, and predatory animals such as feral pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, cats, dogs and mongoose by shooting, snaring, or trapping.
-Maintains records of animals caught or killed including sex, approximate age, and weight.
- Leads and works with the team to maintain and repair fences and other specialized structures to contain or exclude cattle and feral pigs from refuge property.
-Monitors contractors, cooperators, and permittees engaged in fence construction project.
-Leads and works with teams to controls alien plants through use of herbicides, manual, and mechanical removal.
-Sprays non-restricted herbicides using a backpack sprayer or power sprayer mounted on an ATV or in the bed of a pick-up.
-Assists the Maintenance Mechanic and leads the crew with task for the construction, repair and maintenance of refuge buildings, water catchment facilities, simple plumbing systems, sign, and equipment.
-Participates in biological census work including feral ungulate and vegetation surveys and forest bird inventory.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. Education

Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA), allows individuals who currently or formerly were under time-limited competitive appointments at certain land management agencies to compete under merit promotion:
Current appointees. Note: Must submit ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term for LMWFA.
·Hired under competitive examining procedures to a time limited appointment with a land management agency.
·Served under 1 or more time limited appointments by a land management agency for a period of 24 months without a break in service of 2 or more years; AND
·Performed at an acceptable level.
Former appointees:
·Hired under competitive examining procedures to a time limited appointment with a land management agency,
·Served under 1 or more time limited appointments by a land management agency for a period totaling more than 24 months without a break in service of 2 or more years;
·Apply for position within 2 years after separation,
·Separated for reasons other than misconduct or performance; AND

Public Land Corps (PLC) Note. Must provide a copy of the Certificate of Eligibility for PLC Service.
(1) PLC member must provide documentation, verifying their eligibility and meet the criteria:
(a) Served as a qualified youth on an appropriate conservation project completing a minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service that included at least 120 hours through PLC;
(b) Applied to a vacancy announcement for which applications are being accepted of individuals with non-competitive status
(c) Meet OPM minimum qualification standards
(d) Completed his/her recent PLC service, within the last two years.
(2) Appointments must be effected within two years requirement
(3) The two year time-frame cannot be extended
(4) Subject to probationary period
(5) This authority used for General Schedule and Federal Wage System positions
(6) Competitive appointments may be made for temporary, term or permanent positions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):
-Ability to apply and lead crews in pest control methods (traps, snares, firearms) to destructive, depredating, or predatory animals, such as feral pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, or mongoose, by shooting, snaring, or trapping.
-Ability to apply and lead crews applying in pesticides to control invasive plant species using a variety of application equipment, including backpack or had sprayers, ATV mounted sprayers, and power sprayers.
-Ability to collect and record accurate biological data according to set protocols to effectively monitor refuge resources.
-Ability to lead field crews in performance of variety of duties necessary for habitat management and the operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
