Duties

Help

As a Sports Specialist (Dinghy Sailing), you will:

  • Develop and implement weekly, seasonal and annual practice and competition plans.
  • Provide instruction of the highest level in dinghy fleet and team racing to skilled members of the sailing team to prepare them for races, regattas and championships.
  • Provide proper motivation to the team members to reach their highest potential.
  • Travel with midshipmen teams in Inter-collegiate and open competition on weekends.
  • Recruit athlete sailors by actively instructing, racing and participation in the sport in a manner and style that attracts candidates to seek admission to the Academy.
  • Provide content for website and social media updates on team activities.

Ideal Candidate Statement: The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and mid to senior level professional possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity, and capable of adjusting to various work environments, physical demands, and schedules.  The individual must be customer service oriented, with unique skills to develop, manage and coach a Varsity Intercollegiate Dinghy Sailing Team.

  • This position may be eligible for a flexible Maxi-Flex Schedule in conformance with Agency policies and approval of the required agreement.
  • The person selected for this position may be eligible to reside on the Academy grounds in assigned campus housing and pay a monthly housing rental fee, if availably.

Qualifications

To be qualified for this position, you must meet the education requirements and have experience teaching college level classes in the required field of study.

  • To qualify for a Sports Specialist (Dinghy Sailing) you must possess at least 1 sports season of full time experience coaching dinghy sailing or team racing, experience competing in inter-collegiate sailboat racing as helmsman or crew,and experience in sailboat racing rules, sailboat and sail handling techniques applicable to racing.

Education

Education Requirement for a Sports Specialist:  Bachelor’s Degree or higher

Highly Desirable:

  1. Four years competing in intercollegiate sailing with All-America or All-Conference Awards.
  2. Minimum of six years coaching youth, high school and/or collegiate sailors.
  3. US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Level 3 or higher (or equivalent).
