Duties

Help

You will:

- Develop and modify radioanalytical methods for complex environmental matrices;

- Perform radiochemical analyses on a variety of environmental media;

- Interpret and evaluate the results of sample analyses to determine relevance and scientific significance to project and program objectives;

- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to gain information and corroborate findings on radioanalytical projects and studies.

You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

If you are selected, you must complete a one year probationary period.

Qualifications

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as performing radiological or mixed waste analysis on environmental samples; coordination projects or programs; and communicating results and findings in written reports.

Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge of radioanalytical methods and techniques; 2) Skill in data analyses; 3) Ability to evaluate radiological data utilizing statistical methods; 4) Skill in project management; 5) Skill in oral communication; 6) Skill in written communication.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

Chemist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR a combination of education and experience -- including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
