Duties

Help

As a Chemist you will perform duties such as:

  • Plans and accomplishes development for new and improved techniques, methods, processes, materials and equipment in the area of chemical research technology.
  • Utilize analytical techniques, sample preparation procedures, and instrumentation to select traditional or unusual approaches most appropriate for the assignment or to meet new objectives or goals.
  • Plans assigned projects including facilities, time, schedules and integration of requirements.
  • Evaluate and interpret data, results, and significance of information as it relates to the question at hand.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Chemist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Develop detection methods on, Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography tandem Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS, triple quad) UHPLC-MS/MS (triple quad and time of flight), Gas Chromatograph Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS, triple quad) for novel compounds in various biological matrices. (2) Experience with sample preparation and extraction including liquid-liquid extraction techniques, Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) cartridges, and high recovery techniques. (3) Perform statistical validation for developed methods, and validate sample preparations and matrices suitably on ADMET, Bioanalytical, OPCW and exposure validation projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of wok performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service, GS-11.
