Summary

About the Position:The museum specialist has freedom to exercise independent judgement and initiative in technical matters relating to macro artifact maintenance, conservation and restoration and restoration shop management and organization. The museum specialist is part of a team to determine the nature and extent of repairs and conservation/restoration services needed for work assignments, plans related work procedures, and determines proper sequence of actions to complete assignments.

Duties

Help
  • Utilizing specialized technical expertise for the conservation, maintenance and restoration of the museum's valuable collection consisting mainly of historic armored fighting, light tactical vehicles and large caliber guns.
  • Undertake research studies to determine and develop techniques for restoring and conserving macro artifacts within the museum.
  • Oversees the volunteer staff members assisting in macro artifact collections care.
  • Serves as museum restoration shop primary supply officer and primary key control officer.

  • This position has an irregular tour of duty and may require shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, and in other situations.

  • The work of this position requires the employee to follow prescribed OSHA safety practices and requires safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, safety glasses and other personal protective clothing.

  • The incumbent of this position must be able to perform the physical requirements inherent in this work i.e., stooping, standing, bending, crouching, manual dexterity, and arm movement.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement:

have a bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field such as Museum Studies or History. (Note:You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

have a combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above applicants must also meet the Specialized Experience below.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level or equivalent which has prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as Conducting educational and interpretive tours on the museum macro-artifact storage facilities to visitors; Utilizing specialized technical expertise for the conservation, maintenance and restoration of the museum's valuable collection; Maintaining security of macro artifacts while in storage and while artifacts are being moved in and out of storage.

Or

Have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in education or a subject area related to the position to be filled, such as, Museum Study or History. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Or

Have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have at least one year of graduate education as described in B, but less than the required two years. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
