Duties

Help

As a Leadership Development Officer, you will:

  • Provide institutional and academic focus on honor, ethics, and human relations for all Midshipmen. Act as a direct advisor to the Commandant on all aspects of character development and honor and ethics instruction at the Academy.
  • Develop, maintain and instruct certain academic courses that relate to the topics of honor, ethics and morality. Coordinate interdisciplinary courses/programs in support of the Academy honor, ethics and morals teaching goals
  • Be responsible for developing and presenting program and seminars, and delivering lectures on topics pertinent to the ethical professional growth of Midshipmen.
  • Review and assess the regimental training programs to ensure that the values of honor and ethics are included in the leadership training program and are consistent with the Academy mission and goals.
  • Develop and maintain a program of education and mentoring for those Midshipmen who may from time to time be directed by the Superintendent, Commandant, and/or Academic Dean to receive additional education and training on the subject of honor and ethics. Maintain records of such education and training and provides written evaluations of the Midshipmen in the program.

The ideal candidate provides expert level advice relative to leadership development. Provides authoritative advice and guidance on problems not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods; recommendations and decisions are characterized by breadth and importance.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: You will be required to complete a background/security investigation and meet preliminary requirements prior to onboarding.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify for the Grade 13, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-12, it must include:

  • Experience in conducting lectures, and seminars in the areas of honor and ethics and development of leadership skills, including awareness of teaching tools and course materials for the facilitation of instruction in the areas of honor, ethics, and leadership and the application to the maritime profession and the military services.
  • Experience in military organization and management sufficient to exercise and coordinate programs in a structured, regimental setting.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Students enrolled in a qualifying degree program can apply if the anticipated graduation date is within six months of closing date of the announcement. Graduation transcript must be received before start date.
