Duties

Help

The Division of Preservation and Access provides leadership and support for a sustained national effort to preserve and increase the availability of resources important for research, education, and public programming in the humanities.

  • Reviews grant proposals and assesses eligibility and consistency with Endowment goals.
  • Arranges for review and evaluation of grant proposals by peer review panelists.
  • Presents Division policies, procedures, and funding recommendations orally and in writing to internal and external audiences.
  • Promotes the work of the Division and larger goals of the Endowment to outside constituents.
  • Works collaboratively with other Division staff members to accomplish these duties.

Qualifications

At the GS-11 level Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level or equivalent experience; or M.A. or Ph.D. in the humanities; or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.

Specialized experience is experience working in a library, archive, museum, historical society, or other cultural heritage institution; teaching for-credit classes in the humanities; or working as a team member in a humanities project; or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree; or a combination of education and experience that meets the requirements for the position.

At the GS-12 level Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level or equivalent experience.

Specialized experience is experience working with humanities collections in a library, archive, museum, historical society, or other cultural heritage institution; teaching for-credit classes in the humanities; or working as a team member in a humanities project. Excellent writing, editing, and speaking skills are also required for the position. In all cases, work in the humanities should have been performed with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, requiring somewhat extended professional training and experience.

At the GS-13 level Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level or equivalent experience.

Specialized experience is experience in managing humanities collections in a library, archive, museum, or other cultural heritage institution; teaching for-credit classes in the humanities; or working as a senior team member on a humanities project. Specialized experience must also include experience coordinating or directing preservation and access projects, or facilitating support for cultural heritage institutions.. All applicants should demonstrate important attainments and capacity for independent work.

Selective Placement Factor:

Experience working with U.S. history or U.S. political history collections in a professional position, or working for at least one year with U.S. history or U.S. political history collections at a library, archive, museum, historical society, or other cultural heritage institution, and knowledge of issues and trends in the field. Consideration will also be given to those experienced in working with Asian history collections.

Education

A Bachelor's degree in a discipline of the humanities is required (a Ph.D. is preferred).
