Duties

Help
  • This employee organizes and manages databases that consist of records of meteorology, hydrology, soils, chemistry, and vegetation.
  • Develop and implement computer programs to perform Quality Assurance and Quality Control on the data collected.
  • Compile, store, analyze, report and distribute strategic data collected on and off Experimental Forests.
  • Provide technical expertise and consultation in the areas of database management, data analyses, data collection, data visualization and analytics, computer programming and data applications.
  • Analyze ecological data and information to address complex environmental issues; collaborates with scientists and partners; provides advice and responds to frequent user requests.
  • Provide feedback and communicate changes necessary to develop, improve, and enhance the methodologies and databases of environmental data collected on Experimental Forests, associated chemistry laboratories, and beyond.
  • Develop improvements to the procedures used for collecting, verifying, compiling, and summarizing and serving ecological data. Identifies legacy and new data for incorporation into the database.
  • Collaborate and consult on projects related to Experimental Forests to satisfy the requirements of data users and research scientists.
  • Develop data analysis in support of scientific research output. Assist scientists to automate and more efficiently perform tasks associated with ecological modeling, data analysis, and data summarization including tables and figures.
  • Responsibilities also include updating, maintaining and improving access to data from physical sample archives, which contain information about samples collected and stored at experimental forests (e.g., soil, vegetation, water).

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Basic Requirement:

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as the majority of the following: one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as the following:
--Managing ecological data, programming and maintaining environmental sensors and equipment; --Performing statistical analyses and quality assurance and quality control on data collected;
--Analyzing and integrating techniques associated with database management, statistical analysis and image processing;

OR
Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (with coursework directly related to position being filled) in fields such as advanced biostatistics (multiple regression, generalized linear models, mixed models, multivariate analysis; course in R or SAS or python); environmental microbiology; mycology; molecular methods for environmental science or ecology; biogeochemistry or upper level soil chemistry; ecosystem science and field methods for ecosystem science; bioinformatics, metatranscriptomics, metagenomics; data management or data science.

OR
A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
