Duties

Help
  • Provides scientific leadership to all STO programs, projects, and activities. Incumbent represents MSFC science to the external community including NASA Headquarters and field centers, academia, government agencies, and private industry.
  • Advises the STO manager and Center leadership on key scientific issues related to the health and growth of science at MSFC. Works closely with the Center's Partnerships and Formulation Office to cultivate science opportunities for STO and MSFC.
  • Works to integrate science and exploration goals, and provides expert advice on how to provide maximum scientific return on exploration architecture and space transportation infrastructure.
  • The incumbent works to position MSFC to win large science missions within the competitive peer review process.
  • Performs scientific, technical, programmatic, and/or policy reviews to assure that NASA science programs are of the highest scientific and technologic merit and integrity.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess expert knowledge and at least 3 years of specialized experience in scientific research. At least 1 year of this experience must have been in planning and executing difficult programs of national significance or planning and executing specialized programs that show outstanding attainments in the field of research or consultation. At least 1 year of the specialized experience must be at least equivalent to experience at the GS-15 level.

Education

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, preferably an advanced degree in engineering, physical science, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, or electronics.

Additional information

This temporary appointment/promotion may be converted to permanent in the future.

Relocation expenses may be paid consistent with NASA's policy.
