Duties

Help

The Pipefitter Supervisor:

  • Supervises employees involved in plumbing and pipefitting repair, renovation, design, and maintenance of buildings’ steam and hot water plant operations.  
  • Observes work in progress to anticipate and resolve problems.  Inspects completed work for quality.  Provides technical and advisory services with regard to installation, maintenance, and repair of high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems.
  • Plans and supervises new installation, alterations, maintenance and repairs.  Provides technical and advisory services.
  • Provides technical direction and/or help in accomplishing difficult work.
  • Provides technical services with regard to the installation, maintenance, and repair of high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems.
  • Inspects work for quality and implements corrective actions.
  • Plans new installation, alterations, maintenance and repairs.
  • Inspects completed work for quality.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated experienced pipefitter supervisor who has experience performing supervisory work along with pipefitter work which involves plumbing and pipefitting repair, renovation, design, and maintenance of buildings' steam and hot water plant operations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A complete background security investigation before appointment is required.
  • PHYSICAL: Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: Must possess a current and valid state operator's motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: You must be capable of making frequent inspections of the Academy to observe more closely, situations requiring varying solutions. Incumbent must have no fear of heights since assignments require climbing up long ladders to inspect high points of Academy structures. Incumbent must be able to crawl through and into crawl spaces and tunnels to inspect underground piping. During heavy rain or wind storms, must be able to inspect flooded areas, and damaged
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT: There is danger of falling from ladders or scaffolds, from tools dropped by subordinates, and possible eye or hand injuries while operating power equipment. May at times be required to be present and assist in various Academy emergencies as snow storms, ice storms, hurricanes or heavy winds where damage has occurred to buildings, piers, utilities and other Academy facilities.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

You must have the ability to supervise employees involved in plumbing and pipefitting repair, renovation, design, and maintenance of buildings' steam and hot water plant operations.


For the Wage Grade 10, to qualify your application will be rated on the following job elements:

  • The ability to lead or supervise.
  • Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation and repair.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprint reading).
  • Trade Practices (Measurement and Layout).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshooting.
