Duties

Help

Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Utilizes knowledge and skill, of the nature and effects of ionizing radiation, principles and techniques of measurement, evaluation of hazards, principles and techniques employed in medical imaging quality control, and knowledge of standards to effectively conduct programs.
  • Establishes and implement written policy and procedures for authorizing purchase of radioactive materials, using radioactive materials safely, performing radiation surveys and wipe tests, disposing of radioactive material, maintaining all records and reports, safely using Medical Lasers, etc.;
  • Develops and implements decay-in-storage policy and procedures;
  • Investigates overexposure, ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) exceptions, accidents, spills, thefts, unauthorized receipts, uses, transfers, etc.;
  • Inspects all facilities where radionuclides are used and stored;
  • Inspects and calibrate all x-ray equipment;
  • Prepares correspondence, license amendments, applications, etc. as required by Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency;
  • Provides direct radiation safety support for each clinical therapeutic case utilizing a radiopharmaceutical or brachytherapy;
  • Coordinates medical imaging quality control program;
  • Reviews complex protocols for the use of unusual types or quantities of radioactive materials;
  • Performs other duties as necessary.
WORK SCHEDULE: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. This position may be filled as Part-Time (20 hours per week), but hours and tour of duty may vary depending on the needs of the medical center.

PART-TIME: This may be filled as part-time position (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet: (1) Selective Placement Factors - US Nuclear Regulatory (NRC) training and experience requirements to be a Radiation Safety Officer on a Broad Scope License; (2) the Basic Requirement for the GS-1306 series, and; (3) the Minimum Qualifications.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration.

The SPF's for this position are: All candidates must qualify to act as a Radiation Safety Officer on the facility's nuclear material license in accordance with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations (10 CFR, Part 35). When completing the online questionnaire, the three Selective Placement Factors are clearly defined. NOTE: Documentation must be submitted to verify responses provided.

AND, BASIC REQUIREMENTS (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Applicant(s) must meet one of the following:

A. Bachelor's degree (or higher) at an accredited college or university in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. NOTE: If you select this option, you must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. Education will not be credited without documentation.

OR
B. Combination of education and experience with courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level (GS-12) in the Federal service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes using in-depth knowledge of the techniques used to detect and measure ionizing radiation in assessing workplace conditions; performing shipping, receiving and related radiation surveys; performing emergency procedures related to radiation safety; utilizing knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology sufficient to understand radiation protection standards, theories, and practices; understanding and effectively implementing applicable DOT, EPA, NRC, and OSHA regulations; selecting, operating, calibrating instruments used for measuring radiation and radioactive materials; evaluating the need for shielding; determining the types/amounts of shielding required; calculating radioactive decay, attenuation, and performing dose calibrator linearity studies; managing/conducting a radiation protection training program; utilizing current radioactive effluent treatment methods, equipment, and procedures; identifying and evaluating radiation hazards and taking measures to eliminate or control exposure to those hazards; and highly developed interpersonal and communication skills. May have served as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), Assistant RSO or Radiation Safety Specialist. (Resume(s) must clearly support the required experience to be creditable. Physical Requirements: The work is divided approximately equally between sedentary desk work and walking, bending, and climbing required to inspect laboratory and equipment installations. Some occasional crouching, stooping, reaching, and pushing of moderately heavy items such as cards may be required. Lifting up to 50 pounds in weight may occasionally be required.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
