Duties

Help

This is a full-time temporary position not-to-exceed 1039 hours (6 months), excluding overtime in a service year. The service year is the calendar year that begins on the date of the employee's initial appointment in the agency. These appointments may be rehired from year to year. May be rehired without further competition based on work needs, funding, or any other condition of employment.


As the PARK RANGER, you will:

  • Develop and present a variety of interpretive programs including orientation talks, conducted walks and demonstrations to a variety of general public audiences or school groups.
  • Prepare and conduct on- and off-site environmental education programs for a variety of audiences.
  • Staff information desks in visitor center or contact stations, providing interpretive and orientation information to the public; and serve as roving interpreter on trails and visitor uses areas.
  • Staff cooperative association bookstore, making sales, assisting bookstore staff with stocking product, and reconciling daily income journal.
  • Patrol campgrounds via vehicle and foot to provide information and orientation to visitors, gather recreation fees, assist camp hosts, perform housekeeping and maintenance, and identify problems in campground operations that need appropriate staff response.

We must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To be creditable, this experience must have been for 1 year and equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

To be qualified as a GS-07, you must:
A. have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level or higher in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) staff a visitor center or information desk providing information and orientation to visitors; 2) perform front or backcountry patrols in a park or natural area to educate visitors and protect resources; 3) observe, document and forward resource issues (e.g., wildlife observations, backcountry conditions, resource damage, etc.) to superiors. OR

B. Successful completion of at least one year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavior sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR

C. Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. OR

D. I have graduated with a bachelor's degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work AND I have documented Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) during my undergraduate studies. I meet the SAA by one of the following three methods: (1) class standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university or major subdivision; (2) grade point average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on my official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B " or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision). Submit a copy of your transcript and proof of GPA computation, Class standing, or Honor Society membership.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  • Knowledge of retail sales, merchandizing and money handling tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of campground operations and procedures.
