Summary

The incumbent is assigned to the Environmental Management Service, At the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System, New Orleans, LA. He/She functions as a Housekeeping Aid in the Surgical Suite and as part of the Environment of Care. The incumbent is expected to perform a variety of environmental and protective maintenance tasks in his/her assigned work area and to perform related work as required with primary responsibility being the Surgical Suite.

Duties

Help

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Cleans floors, walls, ceilings, baseboards, corners, and waste .receptacles in order to provide a sanitary environment for patients, staff and visitors by using proper sanitation products and equipment to effect a high degree of cleanliness.
  • Cleans bathrooms, showers, partitions, mirrors and washes wall furniture in order to maintain a sanitary condition by applying knowledge received through training in aseptic techniques.
  • Cleans Surgical Suite, utility tables, instrument rooms, X-ray rooms, cart rooms, supply rooms, dressing rooms and any other area as assigned including the outside of vents in all areas. Cleaning is accomplished by damp dusting, mopping, polishing, scrubbing, and washing with mops, brushes, cloths, wet vacuums, heavy duty buffers, and any other tools, equipment or chemicals necessary to perform the required tasks to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Routinely removes all wastes and soiled linen in accordance with current universal precaution techniques and makes-up Operating Room tables with clean linen to ensure a clean operating environment.
  • Due to the isolation routine of the Surgical Suite, must perform duties alone with minimal supervision by following prescribed job procedures and notifying supervisor if surgical work load requires additional sanitation help to clean surgical areas for environmental reasons.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies used in Surgical Suite by checking supply levels, cleaning equipment after use, and reporting any discrepancies to supervisor to prevent a delay in performing prescribed duties.
  • Terminal cleans Operating Rooms by "flooding", scrubbing, mopping floors, and washing down all surgical equipment including overhead lights and light tracks. Incumbent uses wet-dry vacuums, mops, brushes and other tools to provide a sanitary environment.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
